Provide first aid (HLTALD011)
This course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge in providing first aid and basic life support until the arrival of medical assistance, including, calling for help, assessment of causalities and providing first aid technique and basic life support.

- Manual handling technique
- Identifying, assessing and minimising immediate hazards
- Seeking assistance from emergency response services
- Identifying, assessing and managing a conscious/unconscious casualty (DRSABCD)
- Understand airway management including guedel
- Understand the O2 requirement for each oxygen delivery method
- Effective performance of CPR in adults and infants
- Safe demonstration of AED (using LIFEPAK 20e)
- Providing an accurate verbal handover to paramedics
- Identifying and providing accurate management of Anaphylaxis/allergic reaction
- Procedure of blood related anaphylaxis reaction
- Identifying and providing accurate management of Asthma and hospital setting management
- Providing accurate management of non-life threatening/life threatening bleeding
- Identifying and providing accurate management of choking
- Identifying and providing accurate management of shock
- Understanding signs and symptoms of cardiac conditions and chest pain management protocol
- Understanding signs and symptoms of stroke and stroke pathway
- First aid management of bites, stings and poisoning
- First aid management of bone and joint injuries
- First aid management of head injuries
- Management of hard collar and Philadelphia collar
- Wound management principle (including minor wound, burns, sharp injuries) and available dressings in hospital
- Identifying and providing accurate management of diabetes
- Identifying and providing accurate management of temperature related conditions
- Identifying and providing accurate management of seizures
- First aid management of nose bleeding
- The basic structure and function of the human body
- Recognise psychological impact and how to handle the stress
- Reviewing the incident
- Incident report
- Understanding the hospital’s emergency call system
- Understand roles of emergency situation in hospital settings
- Understand and demonstrate of medical handover using ISBAR
Course Prerequisites
This course is flexible in delivery and comprises of a pre-course online component followed by our 6 hour in-person practical course. Pre-study takes on average 4-8 hours depending on your previous experience. Around 95% of our students prefer the method above (as opposed to attending an additional day in-person) as it’s more cost effective, and convenient. However, if you prefer attending the additional day please contact us to arrange course dates.
Participants are required to undertake practical training and assessments at floor level. This includes demonstrating CPR on a manikin for a period of two minutes. If you have restrictions of mobility or an injury which will impact your ability to perform CPR please let us know know prior to booking.
Participants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of attendance. Participants under the age of 18 are required to provide a consent form completed by their legal guardian. Please contact us if you require a consent form.

The course contains 4-8 hour online learning and 6 hour in-person training & assessment.

Qualification Issued
Statement of Attainment in the following units of competency:
- HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
- HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
A certificate (PDF) will be issued following completion of the course.
Qualification Validity
Three (3) year from date of issue.
As per the First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice and the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, Health Education Institute recommends that resuscitation skills are renewed every 12 months.
Our comprehensive student management system will remind you one month before your CPR and first aid certificate is due to be refreshed.
Unique Student Identifier (USI)
All students undertaking a nationally recognised course from 1 January 2018 need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).
